I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatches of December 21 and 22 last relating to the Green Island Cement Co.'s limestone.
I have the honour to refer you to my despatches of
November 23 and December 18 last, in which I stated that this
case had long been closed and requested that you would comply with the undertaking frequently given by the British Minister and
yourself to make no demand for compensation. In your despatches under reply you have not thought fit to refer to this important
undertaking, which shows that you are fully aware that the
decision at which I have arrived in the case, as stated in my two
despatches referred to above, is a proper and correct decision.
As regards your last despatch (of the 23rd. ultimo)
on this subject, the contents thereof have no relation to the
principal demand of the Green Island Cement Company that limestone
should be allowed to be exported, and no advantages would accrue
from a lengthy discussion of your remarks. Leat any misconceptions
should arise, I will, however, reply thereto.
This case arose out of the demand of the Green
Island Cemen Company that the export of limestone should be allow-
meiponixin -ed, and in November 1913 the prohibition of export
from the various quarries was removed in accordance with their
desire. As to the reasons which induced the Company in question
to refrain from purchasing atone from the contractors, the local
officials are at a loss to offer any conjecture.
The statement (1) that after the removal of the
prohibition the action of the officials was such as to prevent
export and (8) that proceedings were taken against the late
Commissioner of Industry in conection with this matter, are
entirely
